Editor estadounidense. Trabajó brevemente en una editorial antes de fundar la propia con su esposa Blanche en 1915, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Su aprecio por la literatura contemporánea y sus contactos literarios contribuyeron a que su editorial se hiciera conocida por publicar obras de gran calidad. Cuando murió, entre los escritores publicados por Knopf había 16 Premios Nobel y 27 Premios Pulitzer. En 1966, la editorial devino una filial de Random House. Knopf Inc. también publicó American Mercury (1924–34), un periódico influyente que fundó con H.L. Mencken y George Jean Nathan.
